School Lock Down December 9, 2013

Today at about 2:02 PM the Police Department received a report of a man with a gun in the church parking lot behind St. Mary’s school.

Officers from UPD, MCSO and CHP responded to the scene and Nokomis, Yokayo and St. Mary’s schools were locked down while a search of the area was conducted.

Ukiah PD received a report of white male adult, 5'11, wearing a dark t-shirt and green pants. He was reported to be carrying a rifle in the church parking lot behind St. Mary's School.

Law Enforcement was unable to confirm the report of a subject with a gun and the schools were released from lockdown at about 2:40.

Law Enforcement will remain in the area of the three schools while students travel home.

Ukiah Police Chief, Chris Dewey said, “The department is extremely concerned about school safety. Although we were unable to confirm the report of a man with a gun, we took every precaution we could and locked down each school in the area. We are appreciative of the school personnel – teachers, students and parents who remained patient while we checked the area. We take these incidents very seriously, and our department is actively investigating this incident.”
