Property

The Property and Evidence Unit plays an essential and highly specialized role within the Ukiah Police Department, serving as a critical link in the chain of custody for all items collected during law enforcement activities. This unit is entrusted with the responsibility of receiving, cataloging, securing, and maintaining a wide variety of property, including evidence related to criminal investigations, items found by members of the public, and personal belongings held for safekeeping.

Staff members in this division adhere to strict protocols and legal standards to ensure the integrity, security, and proper documentation of each item in their care. Their duties include labeling and tracking evidence, ensuring accurate recordkeeping, facilitating the transfer of items to and from crime labs or courts, and ultimately overseeing the lawful return or disposal of property once it is no longer needed.

The integrity of the criminal justice process relies heavily on the meticulous work of this unit, as proper handling and documentation of evidence can be crucial to the outcome of investigations and court proceedings. By maintaining a high standard of accountability and organization, the Property and Evidence Unit plays a vital role in supporting both public safety and the pursuit of justice in the community.
