Press Release DUI

On January 22nd at about 8:15 AM Ukiah Police received a report of a vehicle being driven recklessly; swerving and running stop signs. Officers located the vehicle on Gobbi Street at State Street, noting the vehicle was stopped for the red light but traversing the crosswalk. The suspect vehicle then proceeded eastbound on Gobbi Street, and the officers activated their emergency lighting attempting to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle slowed but did not stop for the stop sign at the Main Street intersection, and continued without yielding to the emergency lighting and sirens. The suspect vehicle was weaving, and again traversed the crosswalk before stopping at the Waugh Lane intersection, then again proceeded still refusing to yield the officers’ lights and sirens.

The suspect vehicle continued traveling over the overpass, then began slowing turning into the trailer park at 700 East Gobbi Street. The suspect vehicle turned too wide, and stopped before colliding with the bushes and signs posted at the park entrance. The officers stopped and exited their vehicles behind the suspect vehicle, and began attempting to order the driver from the suspect vehicle. The suspect then drove the suspect vehicle backwards and collided with the driver’s door of a stopped police vehicle, denting the police vehicle and shattering its window.

The suspect stopped, and officers repeatedly ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and observed a very delayed then very slow response from the driver. The driver appeared impaired and was eventually taken into custody with assistance from Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Because of the damage to the Ukiah Police vehicle, the California Highway Patrol responded and subsequently arrested the driver, 58 year old Jose Margarito Mora, of Ukiah, for DUI and for failing to yield to law enforcement.
