Statistics

Arrests included: 11 for public intoxication, 5 warrant arrests, 4 for shoplifting, 3 for domestic violence 2 for drug influence and/or possessing drug paraphernalia, 2 for violating probation or parole, 2 for brandishing a weapon, and 1 each for: possessing methamphetamine, theft, possessing marijuana at school, possessing a knife at school, and battery on medical personnel. Probation or parole holds were placed on 2 of these arrests.

Officers investigated 2 traffic collisions and 1 hit and run traffic collision. Two vehicles were impounded for 30 days due to the drivers being unlicensed or suspended.

Officers took reports of: 4 elder or dependent adult abuse, 4 child neglect, 3 found property, 3 vandalisms, 2 thefts, and 1 each of;, abandoned vehicle, identity theft, robbery, resisting arrest, burglary, transportation of marijuana, and rape.

Officers assisted the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office with a vehicle pursuit.

Highlights for the Week

On April 3

rdat about 10:20 AM Ukiah Police responded to the Pear Tree Center for an intoxicated male who’d passed out in front of Rod’s Shoes, 520 East Perkins Street. Officers contacted 46 year old Jeffrey Lynn Rich, of Woodland, and had difficulty awakening him due to his extreme intoxication. Rich was arrested for public drunkenness. 13-0815

On April 4

that about 2:40 PM Ukiah Police responded to the Pear Tree Center for an intoxicated male passed out in front of Ross Department Store, 550 East Perkins Street. Officers contacted and awakened 25 year old Steven Matthew Rich, of Kelseyville, and arrested him for public intoxication. 13-0827

On April 4

that about 10:20 PM Ukiah Police responded to the Regency Inn, at 1070 South State Street, for two males arguing. Upon arrival officers were contacted by 44 year old Alan Wayne Crowe, of Ukiah, who told officers that 23 year old Brandon Edward Dean Curtis, also of Ukiah, was carrying a handgun in his waistband. Curtis was immediately detained, and found to possess a methamphetamine pipe. Officers found Curtis had discarded a BB pistol, which was identical in appearance to a real gun, as well as a baton. Officers learned Crowe and Curtis were in an argument because Curtis had apparently been paying for Crowe’s motel room, and Curtis suddenly demanded repayment from Crowe. During the argument, Curtis withdrew the baton and held it over his head in a threatening manner. Crowe apparently pushed Curtis out of his room, and Curtis again came at Crowe with the baton and was holding the BB pistol in the other hand while threatening to kill and harm Crowe. At some point during this altercation the two exchanged blows briefly, and Curtis dropped the weapons to the ground as soon as the officers arrived. Curtis was intoxicated and was arrested for brandishing a weapon, brandishing an imitation firearm, possessing an illegal weapon (baton), threats, and possessing drug paraphernalia. Crowe was found to have a warrant for violating his supervised release, and was also arrested. 13-0831

On April 5

th at about 1:55 PM Ukiah Police responded to 100 North Main Street for a domestic disturbance. Officers learned 20 year old Joseph Henry Mendoza, of Willits, and the victim had been arguing over a cell phone. Mendoza was seen by witnesses pushing the victim several times, at one point causing her to fall into some bushes. There was also a restraining Chris Dewey Chief of Police

order protecting the victim from Mendoza, and he was arrested for domestic violence and for violating the court order. 13-0834

On April 5

that about 8:45 PM Ukiah Police responded to Kohl’s, at 437 North Orchard Avenue, for a shoplifter. Officers learned store employees had observed 38 year old Veronica Madrigal, of Philo, inside the store. Madrigal was seen selecting various clothing items which she concealed amongst her belongings. Madrigal then left the store without paying and was detained by store employees. The value of the stolen items was over $200.00 and Madrigal was arrested for shoplifting. 13-0836

On April 5

that about 11:00 PM a Ukiah Police Officer was waived down by an employee of Patrona’s Restaurant, at 130 West Standley Street. The employee reported he was outside the restaurant several minutes earlier and noticed two males trying to enter through the back door, and called out to them they couldn’t enter that door. The two subjects claimed they were looking for a bathroom and left the area. A short time later the employee exited the back door onto School Street to take the garbage out, and was confronted by the same two male subjects. One of the subjects, later identified as 47 year old David Michael Zakedis, of Willits, began a verbal confrontation with the employee. Zakedis threatened to stab the employee, and displayed a lock blade knife in a threatening manner. The employee reported he walked towards Zakedis and was prepared to engage in a physical confrontation. Zakedis apparently backed away, and he and the second subject then left.

A description of the suspects was broadcast, and officers located the subjects moments later in the 100 block of East Standley Street and detained them. Zakedis was found in possession of a large lock blade knife, and eventually admitted to having displayed the knife to the employee though he claimed the knife was not open and the blade was not visible. Zakedis also had a warrant for his arrest, and was arrested for the warrant and for brandishing a weapon in a threatening manner. The second subject accompanying Zakedis was identified as 41 year old Christian Michael DeLaTorre, of Ukiah. DeLaTorre was determined to have been present during the altercation but made no threats. DeLaTorre was heavily intoxicated and was arrested for public drunkenness, and was found to possess a methamphetamine smoking pipe in his pocket. 13-0837

On April 6

that about 3:35 PM Ukiah Police responded to Kohl’s, at 437 North Orchard Avenue, for a shoplifter. Officers learned 19 year old Natalia Lopez Luna, of Willits, was observed inside the store by employees. Luna was seen secreting a bottle of perfume, valued at over $25.00, inside her clothing, then later leave the store without paying. Luna was detained by store employees and the perfume was recovered. Luna was arrested for shoplifting. 13-0841

On April 7

that about 5:25 AM Ukiah Police contacted 48 year old Robert Vaness, of Kelseyville, for camping in the 1100 block of Airport Park Boulevard, in violation of city statutes. Vaness was found to have a warrant for his arrest for public intoxication, and was arrested. 13-0846

On April 7

that about 8:45 AM Ukiah Police contacted 19 year old Anthony Michael Granados, of Ukiah, at 228 East Perkins Street. Granados was observed rummaging through the dumpster at the location, and was suspected of scavenging recyclables in violation of city ordinances. Granados also had a shopping cart full of various items with him. Granados had a warrant for his arrest and was taken into custody. The shopping cart contained items appeared to have been taken from various dumpsters, including some medical equipment and a cloth bag which Granados had spray painted to alter its appearance. The officer located some personal checks amongst the items, and called the bearer and learned the checks had apparently been placed in an outgoing mailbox and were assumed to have been picked by the USPS. Granados claimed he found the checks amongst garbage. Granados was charged with possessing stolen property and appropriation of lost property. 13-0848

On April 8

th at about 8:05 PM Ukiah Police responded to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center Emergency Room, at 275 Hospital Drive, for an assault. Officers learned 29 year old Scotty Lee Willis, of Ukiah, had been transported to the E.R. by ambulance. Nursing staff was assisting in transferring Willis from the gurney to a hospital bed, when he became vulgar and ordered one of the nurses not to touch him. Willis then tried to punch the nursed in the face, who was able to avoid being struck by Willis as she was aware of Willis’ many repeated previous attempts to assault nursing staff and his history of repeated violent behavior. Willis was placed under citizen’s arrest for assaulting medical staff and taken to the County Jail. 13-0859 Chris Dewey Chief of Police

On April 10

that about 10:10 PM Ukiah Police responded to Wal Mart, at 1155 Airport Park Boulevard, for an intoxicated male subject hitting the soda vending machine. Officers learned 48 year old Robert Vaness, of Kelseyville, had earlier come into the store and walked out with a CD player he hadn’t paid for. Vaness then returned the CD player to a store employee, stating he’d stolen it. Vaness then went to the vending machine and began hitting it. Vaness was located sitting amongst a group in the parking lot, and nearly fell over as he stood up. Vaness was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the County Jail. 13-0877
